The lovely old town with its stately houses, cosy inns and hotels will tempt you to linger awhile. Lively Bahnhofstrasse is great for shopping, and the Stockalper Palace in Brig is one of the most important baroque palaces in Switzerland.

The history of Brig is closely linked with the Simplon Pass, one of the most beautiful alpine passes which starts immediately beyond the city gates. Napoleon built a road through the Simplon Pass in the 19th century to move his armies, thus creating the first man-made road in the Alps.

Brig is a perfect starting point for an excursion to Zermatt or Saas-Fee, for example. It also lies along the route of the famous Glacier Express, which links Zermatt and St. Moritz. Going south, Brig is the most northerly border station for the Simplon railway tunnel to Italy. To the east, you pass through Goms, and the Furka Pass leads to central Switzerland; the Grimsel Pass into the Bernese Oberland; and the Nufenen Pass into the Ticino.

Binntal

Since the 18th century, the Binntal valley, which branches off southwards from Goms at Fiesch, has been known for its large number of different minerals. Many first discoveries have been made in the Binntal. If you walk through the valley with open eyes, you will not only discover an extraordinarily diverse flora and fauna, but with a little luck you may also take home a colorful stone or even a crystal. The rocks typical of the Binntal are presented along the geology trail from Imfeld to the Lengenbach mineral mine. The mineral mine also attracts families whose children are mainly looking for "fool's gold".

GOMMER HÖHENWEG

Discover the Goms from its most beautiful side. The Gommer Höhenweg promises the highest level of hiking enjoyment on excellent and well-marked paths. It leads over 28 km through fragrant larch forests and across wide alpine meadows. The mighty three- and four-thousand-metre peaks of the Valais Alps frame the horizon, while the mighty pyramid of the Weisshorn (4505 m) towers in the middle.

The trail can be divided into two hiking days. The recommended stages are Oberwald - Münster and Münster - Bellwald, each lasting 4 to 4.5 hours. Access is, however, possible from all Goms mountain villages within 20-30 minutes. Thanks to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which stops at each village, a wide variety of tours are possible.

A large part of the forests in the young Rhone Valley are protective forests, which protect the villages with their sun-burned houses from avalanches, rock falls and landslides. Above Ritzingen, an audio theme trail explains the functions of the protection forest and the work of local foresters.
